What to do in the first hour after a burst pipe

Shut off the main water valve, cut power to wet areas if it is safe, call a 24/7 water damage company, and photograph everything before you move it. Drying should start within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold.

1. Shut off the water

Find the main shutoff. In most St. Louis homes it is in the basement on the wall closest to the street, where the water line comes through the foundation. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. If the leak is at a single fixture, like a toilet or washer, its own valve may be enough.

2. Make it safe

If water is near outlets, appliances or the electrical panel, do not walk through it. If you can reach the panel from a dry spot, switch off the breakers for the wet area. When in doubt, wait for help.

3. Call for help

Call a water damage restoration company that answers 24/7. At First Responders, a person answers at (314) 644-8800 and a crew is typically on-site in about two hours.

4. Document before you clean

Take wide photos of each room, then close-ups of damaged items, and a short video walking through the space. Photograph the failed pipe or hose. This is what your adjuster will want.

5. Protect what you can

  • Move rugs, electronics, papers and photos to a dry floor.
  • Put aluminum foil or plastic under furniture legs on wet carpet.
  • Open interior doors and cabinets so air can move.
  • Do not use a household vacuum on water.

6. Report the claim

Call your insurer or file online. Sudden, accidental water from a burst pipe is usually covered by homeowners insurance. Keep receipts for anything you buy.

Why the clock matters

Wet drywall, insulation and subfloor can start growing mold in 24 to 48 hours. Materials that could have been dried in place end up being torn out and replaced, which costs more and takes longer. Professional drying uses moisture meters to find water you cannot see inside walls and under floors.
