Insurance claims, explained

Most of our jobs go through insurance. Here is how a claim works and what we do at each step, so you get paid for the damage you actually have.

The claim, step by step

  1. Stop the damage. We tarp the roof or extract water right away. Keep receipts for anything you buy.
  2. Document. We photograph and measure everything, and log moisture readings for water losses.
  3. Report the claim. You call your insurer or file online. We give you what you need to describe the loss.
  4. Adjuster inspection. We meet the adjuster on-site and point out every damaged area.
  5. Estimate and approval. The insurer approves a scope. You get our own itemized estimate, written in the same line-item format insurers use, so you can compare it with the approved scope.
  6. Work and supplements. We do the work. Hidden damage found along the way, like rotted decking, is photographed and documented so you can share it with your insurer.
  7. Final payment. You pay your deductible. Mortgage companies sometimes co-sign checks, and we explain how that usually works.

Common claim types we handle

This page is general information, not legal or insurance advice. Your policy decides what is covered, and you manage your claim with your insurer. We never waive or pay deductibles.

Insurance questions

Do I call my insurance company or a contractor first?

If damage is ongoing, call us first so the damage is stopped, then report the claim. Insurers expect you to prevent further damage, and emergency work is normally part of the claim.

Can I choose my own contractor?

Yes. You can choose who repairs your home. Your insurer may recommend vendors, but you are not required to use them.

What does my deductible mean?

It is the part of the covered loss you pay. The insurer pays the approved amount above it. Some policies have a separate, often percentage-based, deductible for wind and hail.

What if the adjuster misses damage?

We give you photos and measurements of anything that was missed or found during work, so you can ask your insurer for a re-inspection. Rules on what a contractor can do in a claim vary by state, and in Louisiana contractors may not negotiate a claim for you.

How long do I have to file a claim?

It depends on the policy. Many require prompt notice. Check your policy and report damage as soon as you find it.

Damage happening right now?

Call and a crew is dispatched. We are on-site in about 2 hours, day or night.
